We keep beating 1800 hotels!!

Above you'll see a fax advert sent by 1800 hotels to our office this morning and they advertise a rate of €95 per person in the Crystal plaza hotel Stockholm.
Our rate for the same 3 nights is €59 per person per night. That's €216 saved compared to 1800 hotels rates for a double room and better still our rate includes breakfast.
We charge an annual fee (€179 plus VAT) to get access to our discounted hotel rooms and our award winning booking service but with savings like these you'll recoup your entire annual fee in just a few nights.
Why not give us a call on +353 1 272 4181 and see what we can do for you!

How do we compare to 1800 hotels prices

Below is an fax from 1800 hotels which one of our clients received today.

As you can see they have an exlcusive offer for Rome with the price of the 4* Boscolo Boromini from €504.

Our price for four nights in September is €480 including tax and breakfast (€12 per breakfast), so our saving on 4 nights in September would be €120, when compared to 1800 hotels.

Don't forget 1800 hotels also use the word from! (make your own assumptions!)

Our rate is set and gauranteed every night.

So if you would like to save over £650 (average savings per annum) on your hotel accomodation this year. Why not have a look at our website http://www.hotelexpress.ie/ or send us an e mail or give us a call on +353 1 272 4181.

We are the wolrd's largest and best hotel discount program saving our clients money and time every day!

Client Testimonial

Below are some kind words which one of our clients, Keiran O'Connor kindly took the time to write for us. If you would like to experience the same level of service and the same great rates as Kieran, why not contact us on +353 1 272 4181 or just drop us an e mail on info@hotelexpress.ie.

"I found the hotel express service excellent. The staff take a genuine interest in their customers and really deliver a very effective and efficient service. It was also fun doing business. Caroline was very engaging and pleasant to deal with. An example of this was I was going to Venice to meet my sister. I have not booked in advance and to my horror when I started ringing hotels from the train they were all either full or madly expensive. I rang Caroline and within minutes she had me in a five star hotel for less than €200 that were charging €1000 on their website. The same applied to Florance. I can safely say that every venue that Caroline organised turned out to be lovely.

Would I recommend their service?- yes most definitely"

Fancy a trip to South Africa?

Two of our clients recently travelled to South Africa (during their trip they saved over €925 compared to best available internet prices) and they kindly put pen to paper to document their trip as follows:

Neasa & George O’Hara

Notes on our S African holiday

"General : The arrangements made all turned out as scheduled. Each hotel and other accommodation were expecting us on the day appointed and the rates charged were as quoted. We were happy with the accommodation overall and with the attention that we received at each place. We found that the feeling towards Irish people generally is favourable because of the help that they and their government are giving to S Africa and because we carry no negative historical baggage. One other positive factor from the visitor’s point of view was the fall in the Rand against the Euro. Last year the rate was about 1E = 7.50R. This year it fell to 1E = 12R by the time we left for home. On the negative side there were frequent and unannounced power cuts because of generation capacity shortage. Also, increasing levels of violent crime are causing anxiety among politicians and the general population, although the top politicians try to play down the statistics.

Accommodation

The following are our comments on the hotels etc in which we stayed :

Port Elizabeth - La Provence . A large country house situated outside Port E. About 20 minutes to town. Set in parkland area. Has swimming pool and tennis court. Staff very helpful, if a little formal, particularly the lady part-owner who could not do enough for us. The rooms were very luxurious and tastefully furnished. Coffee/ tea making facilities and a cruet of sherry in bedrooms and a decanter of port in the reading room for self help. Breakfast was bountiful and choice varied. Dinner however was disappointing on both the nights we had it. Overall, however, we would strongly recommend La Provence. Incidentally, Port Elizabeth is not noted for good weather. There was quite a lot of rain over the weekend that we spent there. La Provence is very accessible from airport . Do not accept children under 10 years of age.

Plattenberg Bay: Hogs Hollow is situated 10km east of Plattenberg Bay. Guests are allocated their own chalet which is somewhat reminiscent of the native Japanese Ryocan hotels- all wood. The chalet veranda looked out on pristine forest . All guests had dinner together in a common dining room – which was interesting and the dinner was good. An excellent buffet breakfast was taken at separate tables on the balcony overlooking the bush. One had to watch handbags and food as the monkeys who roamed around the place were apt to suddenly pounce. A good experience but pricey!

Knysna: accommodation was in a self-catering flat in a large block overlooking a lagoon fed by the sea, with yatchs moored along the quays. Accommodation was comfortable . It had a large sunny balcony with canopied table and chairs and 2 sun recliners. It had a washing machine which we were very grateful to use. Within stroll of harbour where there were several good restaurants. There was secure car parking on the ground floor which could be accessed by remote control. We enjoyed our 2 nights there .

George : The Far Hills Hotel : A very pleasant hotel overlooking spectacular mountains. Staff very pleasant but somewhat vague when it came to knowledge about local areas. Hotel caters mostly for tour groups and conferences. We somehow got mixed in with an aged English group and shared their Bar-B-Q dinner without them knowing – by direction , of course, of the hotel. A different lady played the piano in the lounge on both nights- repertoire limited to about 6 tunes , all played to a tango beat. Main courses for dinner were not memorable. Bills were confused and needed sorting out. Rooms small but comfortable. Air conditioning v noisy. Plenty of restaurants in George and would advise going out to dinner. We enjoyed our stay there and would recommend it for value , it’s informal atmosphere and its location.

Capetown : The Westin Hotel : Hotel belongs to the Sheraton group and has all the features associated with a large international brand. Having said that, we found that the room was a bit shoddy and worn. The dining room was large and comfortable and the breakfast ( buffet) was excellent and v varied. The staff were attentive and we had unrestricted use of the common areas on the day we were leaving, which we appreciated as we had an evening flight to London. We arranged for the hotel to pick us up on our incoming flight from George. They sent a chauffeur driven car which was plush but expensive. On leaving we got the hotel to arrange a taxi which was about two thirds the cost. The hotel runs a free shuttle on the hour to the waterfront area, which has many restaurants, shops and a large shopping mall. Best place to eat lunch or dinner (unless you are on business expenses when u could try the hotel, which charges European prices). We would recommend the Westin, particularly as a last stop on your way home."

Thank you for that great report George and Neasa.

The savings George and Neasa made are detailed in their itinerary below:

Where can I find current exchange rates?

Our clients travel all over the world from Cork to Kathmandu, from London to La Paz and to many places in between.. Many of our hotel rates are priced in local currency and a question we're constantly asked is how much is that in Euro or how much is that in Sterling?

To quckly give us an instant conversion we use an excellent website called XE.com. The site describes itself as "The Universal Currency Convertor". I cannot vouch for their ability to convert martian, lunar or other universal currencies but I can say that we have yet to find an earthly currency that they cannot give a conversion rate on.

XE.com for all our currency conversion rates and remember that an average member of Hotel Express saves over £65o per annum compared to Internet prices.

So if you would like to put £650 in your pocket this year why not contact us?

If you look through this blog, you could avail of an absolutely FREE 1 months trial of Hotel Express with no strings attached.

The proof of the pudding is in the eating and we're convinced that if you try us for a month, you'll love our savings and service so much that you will want to become a client. Have a look through and avail of a FREE months trial.

I came across two interesting products recently......

We are inundated here in Hotel Express with offers from various suppliers of a whole range of products and services which they want us to promote to our clients and customers.

Having five minutes to browse through some of these I came across two which interested me and perhaps they might be of intrest to you also:

1. The first is MyMobileVault.com which promises to "save your mobile life". They provide a mobile phone data back up service which ensures that if you lose your mobile phone all those essential contact details are not also lost. They offer a free trial for two weeks (they do take a dollar from your credit card but it is refunded if you do not purchase) and they charge £24 per year for the service. The website looks quite basic but it might be worth a look to protect your data.

PS. I know that you can buy backup devices for your phone data but I tend to carry the backup in my computer bag with my mobile! Stupid I know because if my computer case is stolen so is my phone and my backup so I quite like the idea of storing my mobile data remotely - it might be worth a look!

2. The other site I found quite interesting is Myoffers.co.uk. This site has literally thousands of free to enter competitions for just about anything that could possibly intrest you!. I grabbed a few of the travel related competitions below! Hope you win!

Win a luxury two week holiday in Thailand

Win a family holiday to Orlando, Florida

Win a trip to Tokyo

Win Trip to Gran Canaria

Don't forget that an average individual Hotel Express client saves over £650 (€825) per annum compared to Internet rates and if you look through this Blog you can find a code to give you an absolutely free, no strings attached one month free trial.

We're so confident that you'll love your savings and our service that we know after a month you'll want to be our client!

Have you seen Vazumo?

My friend Chad Gilmer has developed a great new local search product called Vazumo. Like a local "golden pages" it allows you to search for local products and services in your area.

Searching on the internet is great but if you are looking for office furniture in Dublin finding 3,000 links to furniture suppliers from Durban to New Dehli is not always helpful. Vazumo enables you to just search for products and services in your area.

Advertising on Vazumo is cheap - €50 per cube per month and it comes with lots of added extras - you have a link to your website, you can add promotional video, your enquirees can call you for FREE (that's worth up to £2,000 per annum).

That's where our little squirrel icon comes from.

Have a look at Vazumo - it's great and will revolutionise the way we use the internet to search for products and services.

Of course when it comes to discounted hotels just contact us, remember if you have a look through this blog you can have a free months trial and if you then decide to join us as a new member you can have a 90 day money back gaurantee - can we be fairer that that! An average member saves €825 (£650) per annum - call us and see what we can do for you:

Compare our rates to 1800 Hotels

Do you receive faxe campaigns like the one above.

We do and their rates look pretty good.

But as an illustration the savings our members make through our contracted Hotel network - have a look at the rate for 4 nights in a double in July in the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas - looks good doesn't it? - just €506 for four nights in a top 5* hotel!

But it's not that good. Our weekday rate in the Mirage Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas is - $109 per double room per night which equates to €268 for 4 nights at the current exchange rate.

Thats a saving of €238 (£193) on these four nights alone.

So using Hotel Express will save you almost 50% when compared to 1800 hotels and you still have a full year of other great savings to make!

Why not give us a call and see what we can do for you.

    Dosomethingdifferent.com

We have another brand new member benefit - a 7% discount with Dosomethingdifferent.com.

Dosomethingdifferent.com offers pre-purchase discounts off the "at the door" prices of over 1,000 attractions worldwide. As a hotel express member you can benefit not only from the standard Dosomethingdifferent.com discount but you get an extra 7% discount. That extra 7% is worth up to €300 on some of the more expensive activities.

Dosomethingdifferent.com has something for everybody from the London Eye, to Whale Watching in the Pacific, to West End theatre shows, to paintballing, to jet fighter flights in South Africa - you name it dosomethingdifferent.com has it and their prices are cheaper than paying at the door!

You can log on to see Hotel Express extra 7% discounted prices here.

Better still there's a competition when you first log on and if you can identify what the additional discount for Hotel Express members is you can win fantastic dosomethingdifferent.com prizes! You can get additional entries into the competition by giving us the names and e mail adresses of some friends or colleagues who you think might benefit from Hotel Express membership.

Remember an average member saves €825 (£651) per annum so recommending them to Hotel Express might just be the best gift you have ever given them.

PS here's a hint the answer to the question to win your dosomethingdifferent.com prize is 7%

Our Average Member saves €825 (£650) per annum

What does our "average" client save?

Of course this is hard to say as all of our clients are, of course, individuals. But our booking systems are efficient and we can say!

We have clients who travel regularly to South Africa, clients who travel regularly to Asia, clients who travel within the UK and Ireland. Some who travel weekly and some who travel monthly and some who travel only occasionally.

Variety is the spice of life!

We monitor our client savings on a daily basis and for the first two months of this year, our bookings into our contracted hotels have saved our clients of €58 per night when compared to the best Internet prices.

Sometimes we save more, sometimes we save less but an average saving of €58 per night.

But we decided to expand a little more on our "average member" and if our "average member" booked 12 nights per year with us (and got the average discount just 80% of the time - conservative is our middle name), rented a car twice per year for 4 days, stayed in a holiday home for 5 days and used our fuel discount occasionally and used the Gatwick and Heathrow express once - our average member would save:

    €825 (£651) per annum

Now that's not bad for an annual membership fee of just €169 (£119).

Spend €169(£119) and save €825 (£651) and benefit additionally from

    • payment on check out not upfront - travel plans change, no problem, cancel without penalty

    • the time saving convenience of our full free booking service - no more hours spent trawling the internet searching for those elusive great deals!

    • all our additional fantastic extra member benefits

If you would like to be our "average member" and save €825 (£651) and also save lots of time these year why not contact us. Send us an e mail or give us a call on +353 1 2130729.

But don't worry nobody is average in our eyes - try us and see.

We would love to hear from you and if you contact us we'll be delighted to send you an online copy of our guide to finding the cheapest flights. We might just save you money on your flights as well!

    Happy Easter!

Our office will be closed for the Easter Break from Thursday the 20th of March 5:00pm and will reopen for bookings on Tuesday 25th March 9:00am.

Happy Easter to all our friends and clients from all of us at Hotel Express.

    Happy Faces Day

I was speaking with my friend Dermot Byrne, the award winning professional photographer (you can see some of his work at http://www.dermotbyrnephoto.ie/) and that's one of Dermot's award winning shots on the left.
Dermot mentioned to me that this years Happy Faces day run by the Irish Professional Photographers association takes place on the 1st of April this year - Aprils Fools Day.

You can have your picture taken on April Fool's Day by your local Irish Professional Photographers Association (IPPA) member, for just a € 35 donation, which this year will benefit the charity Angels Quest.

Angels Quest is a wonderful charity which provides purpose designed respite care facilities for children and young adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. A welcoming, reliable home-from-home which gives families a much needed break, with peace of mind, from the continuous demands of caring at home for their 'angel' with special needs.

Dermot is based in Bray and you can contact him and have your photo taken and support Angels Quest. Alternately just contact your local Irish Professional Photographers Association member and see if they are particpating and have your photo taken there.

A professional portrait photo in a presentation folder with all proceeds going to charity for jsut €35!

100% of every donation will go to Angels Quest.

The full press release is below:
    1st April?

    - no longer April Fools Day – but “IPPA Happy Faces Day!”

    · Wicklow photographers click for charity!

Four Wicklow photographers are inviting local people to put on a Happy Face for charity on 1st April! On that day, Dermot Byrne (Bray), Garrett Byrne (Arklow), Aisling Madden (Bray) and Frank Murphy (Baltinglass) will take professional portrait photos for a donation of just €35 per photo - and all the money raised will go to the Irish children’s charity, Angels Quest. Nearly 100 photographers nationwide – all members of the Irish Professional Photographers Association (IPPA) - are taking part in “IPPA Happy Faces Day” on 1st April.

Some IPPA members will be hosting the photography sessions at their studios while others will set up events at local centres, hotels or clubs - those interested should log ontowww.irishphotographers.com or check for details on the Wicklow events with: Dermot Byrne (01 282 9560, Dermot@dermotbyrne.ie); Garrett Byrne (0402 39583, gbyrnephotography@eircom.net); Aisling Madden (01 282 2047, info@aislingmadden.com) or Frank Murphy (058 648 1899, murphyphoto@esatbiz.com).

This is the third successive year of the “IPPA Happy Faces Day” fundraising event which has raised more than €95,000 for charity in its first two years. Portraits are a single sitting of individuals aged from 4 to infinity and each participant will receive a 5x7” photograph in a presentation photo.

Angels Quest is a charity founded in 1996 by Deirdre Kelly to provide care for special needs children from the ages of two to sixteen all over Ireland. It builds respite care homes and to date has three homes in Glenageary, Tallaght and Clane, with a fourth in Donabate, County Dublin under construction. All of the funds raised on Happy Faces Day 2008 will go towards the final completion of this home. The charity receives no government funding and relies solely on the goodwill and donations of the general public. The homes provide children with care and stimulation and allow parents to have a well earned break.

Deirdre Kelly comments, “Angels Quest is extremely grateful to be the benefactor of IPPA Happy Faces Day 2008”.

The Irish Professional Photographers Association (the IPPA) has been serving the interests of professional photographers and dedicating itself to the improvement of standards in Ireland since it’s inception in 1949. With a membership of over 300 practising professionals nationwide, IPPA members as individuals are regularly involved with their communities in all manner of charitable activities. In 2006 it was decided to harness the goodwill and the photographic skills of IPPA members for the benefit of a nationally based charity and Angel’s Quest was chosen to be the beneficiary in 2008, the third IPPA Happy Faces Day.

    Testimonials and other good stuff

"M3 medical have 3 staff that regularly stay overnight in hotels throughout Ireland. We Joined Hotel Express in November 2007 and though dubious at first we have actually saved significantly since we joined. Our fee was repaid in savings in the first two months. We also can book a hotel by contacting one number while we are travelling and all the necessary arrangements are made and texted to us. This removes all the hassle of contacting directory enquiries getting the number of the hotel; contacting reservations and trying to negotiate their best prices. I, as a general rule, do not put my name to an endorsement of a service but have to say that everyone should be using Hotel Express."

Aidan Mulloy, m³ Medical, Sandyford, Dublin 18 3rd March 2008

"I joined Hotel express 2/3 years ago and have never had a problem getting a hotel since. I travel alot and need to book hotels at the last minute. I ring hotelexpress with my request and with in minutes they have a room available for me. When travelling no matter what part of the world you are in,the only tel.no. you need is hotelexpress. Their hotels are excellent and are up to 1/2 price -what more can I say. "

    Noel Hanna, 7Summits2Seallevel.com, Feb. 08

"I have nothing but praise for your company. The reservation service is uncomplicated and smooth. The hotels is Belfast are superb with significant savings on the standard rate. I haven’t taken advantage as yet of the additional member benefits so I can’t comment as yet. "

    Golfing Holidays in France

    Golfing Holidays In France
    By Martyn Davis

With stunning surroundings and wonderful gastronomy really makes France a top destination for golfers and from Biarritz to Brittany, France can offer a great variety of uncrowded golf courses, which range from the novice to the more experienced golfer. In fact some of the very top rated courses in Europe can be found in France!

In the South there is a terrific variety of golf courses plus the cuisine and temperate climate make this a great destination for all year round golfing holidays.

Also, France is ideal for a golf break at any time of year, with courses in all regions of France and with around a hundred new golf courses having been built over the past few years, and over 500 in total, you certainly have plenty of choice!

And although golf is a very popular past time in many countries, the game does not have the same popularity in France as it does in places like the United Kingdom, as they are more into sports such as cycling, and this is probably why you can still get to experience golf in peace and tranquillity at your own pace and not like being on a conveyor belt or being rushed when you least need it!

Now the main golfing areas most people think of in France are centred around places near to Le Touquet and Biarritz, but there are numerous other excellent golf courses dotted all over the country and some are still virtually undiscovered, which can mean some inexpensive quality time for the golfer when travelling through France.

One popular area is Provence and the Cote d'Azur which have golf courses from Monte Carlo to the Pyrenees and one of these would make an ideal destination for a longer golfing holiday especially with the weather. But in the Rhone Alpes region are private hotels with their own golf courses set amidst the stunning mountain scenery.

The fairways within the Loire and Burgundy regions are either a short flight to France or easy drive for most people and are in the ideal location for those that want other things to occupy them when not on the golf course.

If you are looking for a golf weekend or golf holiday, there is so much choice, but if you prefer a slightly cooler climate than the South of France, then the regions of Brittany, Normandy and Pas de Calais are good options, plus with well over 130 golf courses that are suitable for most handicaps along with very reasonable green fees, the short trip across the channel by ferry or short flight can make for a very reasonable weekend break with your golfing friends.

And in the Ile de France region, which hosts the capital of France, Paris, you have over 60 different golf courses to choose from, so it is very easy to slip away from the city and have a day of peace and tranquillity on the golf course with your work colleagues. Or if you are on holiday with your family you could combine some sight seeing in Paris with a half-day of golf while your family could enjoy some delicious French food at the clubhouse in settings of absolute beauty.

We all realise that the Loire valley is famous for its chateaux, but there are also numerous golf courses amongst the splendour of this region and what better place to play a round of golf, then enjoy the fine wine over a nice lunch before heading back to your accommodation.

Looking at the South West of France, which has a varied landscape and culture is an ideal place to enjoy the French food, wine, maybe even visiting some chateaux, glorious beaches, vineyards, distilleries and museums, so this area has so much to offer besides the golf, of which there are around 90 courses, which means that no one in your holiday party will become bored.

However, if you love sight seeing, being able to see snow capped mountains all year round or glorious beaches, then the South East of France is definitely the place for you, and with well over 100 golf courses to choose from, you will be spoilt for choice in this region, although you may find that your budget dictates a little, as some of the green fees can be far more expensive than the courses in the North of France.

Another region is Sologne, which is situated just south of Orleans and is famous for its lakes and its excellent hunting and fishing, yet has now also become a popular destination for golfers, who like experiencing the fine French food and wine in this area, and you will find delights such as pheasant, partridge, venison, wild boar, carp, eel and trout on the menu.

Yet the area around Bordeaux has now emerged as a great golfing area where one can not only enjoy the courses amid vineyards, but also get to experience the wine, which is another ideal place to enjoy the best of both pleasures!

So whether you decide to arrange the golf holiday to France yourself or go for a complete package holiday, you can discover fairways that rank some of the best in Europe, plus some virtually undiscovered gems.

    Just Enjoy! www.placesinfrance.com

Hotel Express - Client Profile - Noel Hanna

Noel Hanna, Everest Climber, Endurance Racer, Guinness World Record Holder, Adventurer.

In the course of carrying out bookings for one of our clients, Noel Hanna, we could not help but notice that he stayed all over the world. Indeed, one particular day he called our booking service and asked Fran could she book him a room for two days hence. But he said he would be out of phone range for the next two days as he was about to set off on the final stage of a mountain ascent!

Needless to say this twigged our intrest in the office and we decided to "investigate" Noel. What a guy he has turned out to be! Noel has climbed Everest twice, has competed in numerous long distance and endurance events. To see all that Noel has already achieved just open this link http://www.7summits2sealevel.com/pages/thechallenger.asp

But that's not all! Noel is also a Guinness Book of Records record holder and holds the record for Maxtrek going from sea level to the height of mount Everest (8848m) and back again. This he completed in just 21 hours and 50 minutes.

And there's more! Noel is currently completing the 7 summits to sea level challenge. Noel will climb the 7 highest peaks on the 7 continents and then descend to sea level as quickly as possible. He has already completed 5 of the 7 ascents (and descents). Climbing the 7 highest peaks will put Noel in a very illustrious group - Only 198 climbers have completed this challenge.

Nobody has completed Noels 7 summits to sea level challenge.

Noel is about to set off on another Everest ascent for a most worthy cause - hopefully raising £150, 000 (or more) for the charity Ulster Cancer Foundation climbing with Lynne Stark and cancer survivor Peter McAlindon. A previous Everest ascent of Noels raised over £80,000 for Barnardos.

It's a fantastic worthy cause and if you would like to support Noel, Lynne and Peter's efforts to raise £150,000 for the Ulster Cancer Foundation just open the following link

    http://www.ulstercancer.org/events/everest.asp

You can follow Noel, Lynnes and Peters ascent online on Noels Blog. They'll be travelling and climbing for the next two months.

If you want to see more about Noel have a look on Mount Everest Net, Team Geared Up, Everest Ascent and on the BBC News site.

Of course when Noel travels and needs Hotel Rooms he uses Hotel Express. Noel says "I joined Hotel express 2/3 years ago and have never had a problem getting a hotel since. I travel a lot and need to book hotels at the last minute. I ring hotelexpress with my request and with in minutes they have a room available for me. When travelling no matter what part of the world you are in,the only tel.no. you need is hotelexpress. Their hotels are excellent and are up to 1/2 price -what more can I say"

    Noel Hanna, 21 Feb 08.

Follow Noel, Lynne and Peter's progress on Noel's blog. We certainly will be.

If you would like to experience the hotel rates and service that Noel gets, just contact us by e mail or call us on +353 1 2130729. Membership costs just £119 plus VAT (€169 plus VAT) per annum. If you decided to avail of Hotel Express's services and mention Noel, Lynne, and Peter's ascent or this Blog article we'll send a £10 donation to the Ulster Cancer Foundation!

    VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)

We use VOIP (voice over internet protocol) extensively in our office. For those of you not in the know this basically means using the internet for your phone calls rather than traditional phone lines and at a considerable saving on the "normal cost" of traditional phonecalls.

You can use VOIP in a number of ways:

    1. Using a VoIP telephone
    2. Using a "normal" telephone with a VoIP adapter
    3. Using a computer with speakers and a microphone

Here in the office our experience with VOIP has been largely positive. It is vastly cheaper than using normal phone lines especially for long distance calls. Indeed with many of the providers a number of long distance locations are actually free.

Quality of the line can be variable and because of that we use three different providers: Skype, VOIPbuster and Blueface. We have found that when sound quality on one provider is poor on a particular day we just switch to one of the other providers. Skype in our experience is the most expensive of these three providers. We use these on a "pay as you go basis" and each charges a per minute fee to various destinations. As I mentioned they provide free calls to some locations. If you were very clever you could only use each provider for locations to which their calls are free.

The bottom line is that we use VOIP extensively for our Hotel Bookings to overseas locations and our normal phone lines for local calls and to speak with clients.

I came across a company Vonage in the UK the other day. I had not heard of them before (perhaps I have been living in a cave!). The reason they stood out to me is that they offer a number of set price packages i.e. all calls to certain locations are "free" for a set monthly rate. So you can spend hours on the phone and know that at the end of the month your charge is the same.

Their packages start at £5.99 per month (it rises to £7.99 after 6 months - they'll get you eventually!) for unlimited calls to the UK and Ireland. Their top plan costs £18.99 per month for unlimited free calls to 45 countries worldwide. You need some equipment (a box between your computer and your phone) and these cost from Free to £9.99. These are their home user rates and they offer business packages as well. What caught my attention was the low monthly cost. As with all these things of course there is a catch - a 12 month contract and you don't know how well it's going to work on your broadband connection until you try it (Hobsons choice!).

As I hadn't heard of them before I had a quick scoot around the internet and found plenty of positive words e.g. Review Centre, Mybroadband. There are some negative as well e.g. SMStextnews. Mainly positive reviews from what I see.

With any of these VOIP services the quality of your calls - sound quality, interference, delay etc. is definitely related to the quality of your broadband connection. So if your still on dial up or your broadband is slow VOIP is definitely not for you.

However, if you need to make extensive long distance phone calls VOIP is certainly worth considering. Untill the quality is consistently perfect (which in my experience it isn't) I am inclined to hold on to my landlines as well. As we say in Ireland "just to be sure to be sure"

There's a really helpful blog Disneyland Family Vacation which has lots of great tips about your visit to Disneyland inlcuding 10 Reasons to Stay on or off the Disneyland Property, 10 not so common things not to be missed at Disneyland and lots more. The blogs author is clearly a "Disneyland addict" - what a great thing to be addicted to!

But if you travel on business and want to reduce your hotel costs why not e mail us and we'll show you what we can do for you.

Doolin, County Clare, Ireland, the perfect location for a family getaway.

Need to get out of the fast lane for a few days? Doolin located in country Clare, close to the world renowned Burren, is a fantastic place to visit. Better still there’s lots to do. This article describes just a few of the many attractions in the area.

The Burren: The name Burren comes from the Irish word “Bhuireann” which means a stoney place. Stoney it certainly is: 300 sq. kilometres of limestone covered countryside. However, it is not as desolate as it sounds. Rare Mediterranean and Alpine plants flourish side by side. A guided tour is a must. Unless you are a botanist, you will be astounded by its rocky beauty but without a guide you’ll miss the incredible flora. If you’re feeling energetic there are many mapped walks across the Burren.

Aillwee Cave: if you have children you should visit Aillwee cave. Jack McCann a local man originally discovered the cave and investigated it by candlelight. However, Jack kept his find secret for decades and only showed the cave to others in the 1970’s. The cave was opened to the public in 1976 and extends for at least 1 km underground. This hugely impressive cave contains waterfalls, stalagmites, stalactites, brown bear bones and lots more. Surrounded by a forest walk with a restaurant on site, it’s a half days entertainment in itself.

Cliffs of Moher: The cliffs of Moher tower over 200 metres above the Atlantic Ocean. There’s a new visitor centre with an excellent Cliffs of Moher interpretive display –“Atlantic Edge”. The virtual reality cliff face show – “The Ledge” – should not be missed. After that a walk along the cliff edge gives outstanding views of the cliffs and Atlantic. Don’t worry it’s walled and safe for kids.

Cliffs of Moher boat trip: drive to Doolin pier and you can book a boat trip to the base of the Cliffs of Moher. Once there you cannot but be amazed at the sheer size and rugged beauty of the cliffs. The tourists on top of the cliffs are but distant specs and you can get a close up view of the bird population of Atlantic Puffins, Gulls, Guillemots, Shags, Ravens and Choughs. You can also book trips to the nearby Aran Islands from Doolin pier. These trips range from a ½ a day to an overnight stay.

Doolin pubs: The pubs of Doolin have been a breeding ground for world renowned traditional Irish musicians. There are three traditional pubs McGanns, O’Connors and McDermotts in Doolin. All have lots of traditional music and home cooked food. Kids are allowed until 9:00pm.

The Burren Perfumery: a most interesting visit with all the flowers and herbs that form the basis of the perfumes and soaps locally sourced on the Burren. There’s a small tea room and herb garden.

The Burren Interpretive Centre, Kilfenora: there’s an excellent “walk through time" Burren exhibit, a video, craft centre and tea room.

A visit to Lahinch beach on a summers day is reminiscent of Hawaii with surf schools the length of the beach.

Liscannor Stone and Rock Shop: full of precious stones, semi precious stone, local stone and lots and lots of prehistoric fossils. As you drive back from one of the other many attractions in the area you can just call in to have look! But beware you'll probably emerge with a 10,000 year old fossil souvenir!

The best thing about all of these attractions is that none is more than a half an hour drive from Doolin. Doolin can be very busy in the summer but it’s great place to visit and lots to do. You could consider a few days away outside the bustling summer season and if you are lucky enough to get good weather a great time is guaranteed.

FOTO.COM 50 free prints for Irish Customers

Digital cameras and inbuilt phone cameras are fantastic, but I still find myself needing to travel to the local chemist shop / supermarket whenever I need prints. I really like the www.foto.com website. There you can upload your photos online and click a button. Hey presto, four days later your prints arrive by post.

For Irish users they currently have a promotion advertising, 50 free prints with every print order. For large orders they are promoting a price of 1c per print for prints 501 - 1,000 on 6 X 4" prints ( a saving of €40 apparently).

Need some photos printed in Ireland, why not take advantage of their offer.

Maxroam Further Improves - now you can "roam for free"

Remember that company Maxroam, we mentioned them previously. Their Sim card

  • reduces your roaming charges hugely

  • allows your callers only pay landline charges when calling you

  • allows you to have fixed landline numbers (from 52 countries)directed to your mobile, creating a virtual presence in all those countries

  • Ronan O'Brien highlighted in a comment to our earlier post that they have further improved their service and now they allow free call forwarding.

What does this really mean for Maxroam Sim Card Users?

  • arrive at your destination

  • if you have a Hotel direct telephone number in your room, or office or other landline number you can forward all your Maxroam numbers to that number FOR FREE

  • Your clients dial your Maxroam local number which goes straight to your Hotel Room (or other landline number

  • You pay no call forwarding charges, no roaming charges, your caller pays a local call charge.

  • The bottom line is that you are now roaming for free and your clients are just paying a landline call to call you - a win / win all round.

  • You can just change your call forwarding number as you move from hotel to hotel and your callers just call the same maxroam local landline number to call you.

  • Lally Logic also gives a very positive reveiw of the Cubic telecom phone and Maxroam.

I know that a number of our Hotel Express clients are now using the Maxroam Sim and feedback is very good. So if you travel on business and want to reduce your roaming charges. Or if you are a small business and want to create a virtual global presence with lots of (normally priced-not premium priced) landline numbers forwarded to your phone then you should have a look at Maxroam.

P.s On a totally seperate unrelated issue Ronan O'Brien runs an excellent online fancydress costume business in Ireland www.irelandcostumes.com . So the next time you are invited to a fancy dress party (yes I hate them too), you can order your fancy dress costume on line at the click of a button. The party might be painful but at least ordering the costume isn't!

Get a MAXroam SIM and Enjoy Global calls at local prices
